Dental & Optical Cover Kenya: Real Prices from 8 Plans

A client asked me a simple question last month: "How much to add dental?"
I opened four brochures. Four completely different answers. One insurer sells dental at any limit you like. One locks it to your inpatient tier. One refuses to sell dental unless you buy optical too. One throws both in free and doesn't mention it anywhere on the front page.
Nobody publishes this side by side. So here it is.

The One Number That Matters
Before any table, understand this: dental and optical cover costs 35% to 55% of the limit you're buying.
Not 5%. Not 10%. Somewhere between a third and half.
Buy a KES 20,000 dental limit and you'll pay roughly KES 6,600 to KES 7,200 for it. Buy KES 30,000 and you pay about KES 9,500 to KES 11,000.
That ratio is the whole story. Regular health insurance works because most people don't get hospitalised, so the healthy subsidise the sick. Dental and optical don't work that way. Almost everyone uses them, and everyone uses roughly the same amount. So the insurer prices it as what it actually is: a payment plan with a small discount, not real risk transfer.
Which means the buying rule is simple. If you will definitely spend most of the limit, it's worth it. If you're buying it "just in case", you are almost certainly better off keeping the cash.
The Four Ways Insurers Sell It
This is where people get confused, because the four models aren't comparable at all.
| Model | What it means | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Bundled free | Included, no extra premium, small limit | AAR Individual, AAR Family, AAR ShwAARi |
| Free choice | Pick any limit from a table | AAR Seniors CAARe, APA Jamii Plus, Heritage HeriAfya |
| Tier-locked | Your inpatient limit decides your dental limit | Jubilee JCare, Jubilee J Senior |
| Pair-only | Can't buy one without the other | Old Mutual AfyaImara Seniors |
Comparing two quotes without knowing which model each uses is how clients end up paying for something they thought was included.

Free Choice: Pick Your Own Limit
APA Jamii Plus
The cleanest pricing in the market. Dental and optical cost exactly the same, and you buy each independently.
| Limit | Dental | Optical |
|---|---|---|
| KES 10,000 | KES 3,784 | KES 3,784 |
| KES 20,000 | KES 6,600 | KES 6,600 |
| KES 30,000 | KES 9,510 | KES 9,510 |
Note the ratio improves as you go up: 37.8% at the 10K limit, 33% at 20K, 31.7% at 30K. Buying bigger is proportionally cheaper. That's true across almost every plan here.
Heritage HeriAfya
Widest range of anyone, from KES 10,000 all the way to KES 60,000, at the same rate for dental and optical.
| Limit | Dental (or Optical) | Both together | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| KES 10,000 | KES 3,780 | KES 6,048 | KES 1,512 |
| KES 20,000 | KES 7,560 | KES 12,096 | KES 3,024 |
| KES 30,000 | KES 11,340 | KES 18,144 | KES 4,536 |
| KES 40,000 | KES 15,120 | KES 24,192 | KES 6,048 |
| KES 60,000 | KES 22,680 | KES 36,288 | KES 9,072 |
Heritage is the only plan here with a genuine pair discount. Buy both and you pay 80% of what the two cost separately, a flat 20% off at every limit. If a client wants both, Heritage is almost always the cheapest route.
AAR Seniors CAARe
The odd one out: optical costs more than dental on this plan, which is the reverse of what most people assume.
| Limit | Dental | Optical |
|---|---|---|
| KES 15,000 | KES 5,571 | KES 7,071 |
| KES 20,000 | KES 7,429 | KES 9,429 |
| KES 30,000 | KES 11,143 | KES 14,143 |
| KES 40,000 | KES 14,857 | KES 18,857 |
Optical runs a flat KES 1,500 to KES 4,000 above dental at every step. Makes sense for the age group, glasses get replaced more predictably than teeth get fixed.

Tier-Locked: The Inpatient Limit Decides
Jubilee JCare
You don't choose your dental limit. Your inpatient tier chooses it for you.
| Inpatient limit | Dental/optical limit | Price each |
|---|---|---|
| KES 500,000 | KES 5,000 | KES 2,696 |
| KES 1,000,000 | KES 10,000 | KES 3,517 |
| KES 2,000,000 | KES 20,000 | KES 7,151 |
| KES 3,000,000 | KES 30,000 | KES 10,668 |
| KES 5,000,000 | KES 40,000 | KES 17,819 |
| KES 10,000,000 | KES 50,000 | KES 21,483 |
Look at that bottom rung: KES 2,696 to insure KES 5,000 of dental work. That's 54% of the limit. The worst value on this page. If your client is on JCare's 500K tier and wants dental, tell them to open a savings account instead.
The 10M tier is the opposite: KES 21,483 for a KES 50,000 limit, 43%. Still not cheap, but it's the best ratio Jubilee offers.
Jubilee J Senior
| Inpatient limit | Dental/optical limit | Price each |
|---|---|---|
| KES 500,000 - 1,000,000 | KES 30,000 | KES 14,068 |
| KES 3,000,000 | KES 40,000 | KES 23,212 |
| KES 5,000,000 - 10,000,000 | KES 50,000 | KES 24,619 |
Senior dental is priced harder than adult dental, as you'd expect. Note the jump: moving from the 3M to the 5M inpatient tier costs you only KES 1,407 more in dental but buys KES 10,000 more limit. If a client is choosing between those two tiers and wants dental, that alone can decide it.

Pair-Only: Old Mutual AfyaImara Seniors
One limit, one price, and you cannot buy them separately.
| Limit | Dental | Optical | Must buy both? |
|---|---|---|---|
| KES 20,000 | KES 16,176 | KES 16,176 | Yes |
So the real number is KES 32,352 for KES 40,000 of combined cover, and there is no smaller option. That's 81% of the limit, by far the most expensive arrangement here.
For most senior clients this is the line item to drop. The premium saved covers a year of routine dentistry out of pocket with change left over.
Bundled Free: The AAR Plans
AAR Individual, AAR Family and AAR ShwAARi include dental and optical at no extra premium. On ShwAARi it's a bonus of KES 5,000 to KES 15,000 each.
The limits are small, and that's the point. Free small cover beats paid small cover every time, and nobody has to make a decision about it.
Worth knowing when you compare quotes: an AAR quote that looks more expensive than a Jubilee quote may already include dental and optical that the Jubilee quote charges separately. Add the line items before you compare totals, or you'll talk a client out of the cheaper plan.
So When Is It Actually Worth Buying?
Buy it if:
- Someone in the family wears glasses and replaces them yearly. Optical is the more predictable of the two.
- There's known dental work coming (crowns, root canal, orthodontics for a teenager).
- You're on Heritage and want both. The 20% pair discount is real money.
- It's bundled free. Obviously.
Skip it if:
- You're on a low Jubilee JCare tier. 54% of the limit is not insurance.
- You're on Old Mutual Seniors and don't need both. 81% combined is worse than paying cash.
- You're buying it because it "feels incomplete" without. That feeling costs KES 7,000 a year.
The honest maths: at 40% of the limit, dental cover pays off only if you use more than 40% of it. A single filling and a cleaning won't get you there. A crown will.

What Agents Get Wrong
Three mistakes I see constantly:
- Quoting dental without checking the model. You promise a client KES 30,000 of dental on a plan where the tier caps them at KES 10,000. That's an awkward call to make later.
- Comparing totals across bundled and unbundled plans. See the AAR note above.
- Forgetting the pair rule. Old Mutual Seniors will not sell optical alone. If your quote shows optical only, it's wrong, and the client finds out at underwriting.
Get the model right first, the price second. The model is what breaks quotes.
The Short Version
- Dental and optical cost 35% to 55% of the limit. It's a payment plan, not risk cover.
- Four different sales models, and they don't compare directly.
- Cheapest for both: Heritage HeriAfya, 20% pair discount at every limit.
- Best free option: any AAR plan, bundled at no premium.
- Worst value: Jubilee JCare at the 500K tier (54%) and Old Mutual Seniors pair-only (81%).
- Buy it when you know you'll use it. Otherwise keep the cash.
Every figure above comes straight off the underwriter brochures, not from a rate estimate. If a quote you've been given disagrees, ask which brochure version it came from.
