    Opening Scripts

    The Pattern Interrupt

Don't sound like every other salesperson.

Standard opening (boring): "Hi, my name is John from ABC Insurance. Do you have a few minutes to talk about your health insurance needs?"

Pattern interrupt (better): "Hi [Name], this is John. I know I'm calling out of the blue — do you have 30 seconds for me to tell you why, and you can decide if it's worth more of your time?"

    The Relevance Hook

    Show you've done homework:

"Hi [Name], this is John. I noticed [Company] has been growing — you opened a new branch in Mombasa, right? I work with similar companies on their group health insurance and thought there might be a fit. Worth a quick conversation?"

    The Referral Mention

    If someone referred you:

"Hi [Name], this is John. [Referrer name] suggested I reach out. He mentioned you might be looking at health insurance options. Is this a good time for a 2-minute conversation?"

    The Honest Approach

"Hi [Name], this is John from BimaSasa. I'll be straight with you — I'm an insurance agent. I help companies like yours get better health coverage at competitive rates. If that's not relevant, just tell me and I won't waste your time. But if it is, can I ask you one question?"

    Getting Past Gatekeepers

    Receptionist Scripts

When they ask "What's this regarding?"

Option 1 — Confident specific: "It's regarding their company's group health insurance program. They'll know what it's about."

Option 2 — Create curiosity: "It's a professional matter. Can you put me through? I'll be brief."

Option 3 — Honest approach: "I'm an insurance consultant. I was hoping to discuss their employee benefits. Is this a good time to reach [Name]?"

When They Say "They're Not Available"

"No problem. When would be a better time to call back?"

Then: Actually call back at that time.

    Getting Direct Numbers

    • LinkedIn (sometimes listed)
    • Company website (sometimes)
    • Ask gatekeeper: "What's the best direct line to reach them?"
    • Email first to establish contact

First 30 seconds call structure visual with steps

    The First 30 Seconds

These are everything. Blow them, call's over.

    Structure

    1. Who you are (brief)
    2. Why you're calling (relevant to them)
    3. Hook (curiosity or value)
    4. Permission (can we talk?)

    Example (SME Decision Maker)

"Hi [Name], this is John from BimaSasa. I work with SMEs like [Company] on their group health insurance — we recently saved a similar company KES 300,000 on their renewal. I'm not sure if that's possible for you, but would it be worth a 10-minute conversation to find out?"

    Example (HR Manager)

"Hi [Name], this is John. I help HR managers compare health insurance options quickly — I know it's usually a painful process. I'm not asking you to switch anything today, but if you're open to seeing how your current plan compares to what's available, I'd love to send you a quick comparison."

    The Bottom Line

    Cold calling works when:

    FactorHow
    You're preparedResearch before calling
    You're relevantHook is about them
    You're briefRespect their time
You ask for littleMeeting, not sale
    You're persistentFollow up, call back

It's a numbers game with skill layered on top. Make more calls, get better at calls, and results follow.
